  • In an interview with Interview Magazine, Madonna opens up
  • She discusses her past
  • She was homeless
  • She then managed to make a name for herself in a rather unusual way

Just recently, Madonna was invited to speak in an interview with the famous Interview Magazine. During the conversation, the singer discussed several upcoming projects, but she also reflected on significant moments from her past. In particular, she opened up about the period before she became famous—a time in her life she describes as difficult, unstable, and sometimes uncomfortable.

I had no money. I got by as best I could. I was just living, drifting along. I was squatting in apartments. People would let me stay for a few months, then I'd sublet a place for six months, and move on. I was constantly getting kicked out. I was living in an illegal situation,” she told Interview Magazine.

At that time, she was determined to make it in music. After recording the demo for her song “Everybody,” she was actively looking for an influential person who could help her get her work out to the general public. She told Interview Magazine:

“I'd recorded my demo of ‘Everybody,' and someone had told me about a DJ named Mark Kamins. Everyone kept telling me, ‘You absolutely have to go there, meet him, and figure something out. And try to dress in a unique way, because they won't let you in if you don't look interesting.' I thought to myself, “Oh crap, I don't have anything interesting to wear.” I was living in my dance clothes, because that's why I'd come to New York: to be a dancer.

This period, marked by financial insecurity but also by unwavering determination, is a good illustration of the difficult early days of her career, before she became the global icon we know today.

A Turning Point in Her Career

Madonna reflects on a memorable anecdote from the early days of her career, candidly recounting her perseverance as she tried to make a name for herself in the music industry. She explains that back then, she didn't hesitate to approach industry professionals, even if it meant persisting at length to be heard.

“He thought I was a real stalker. As soon as someone would say, ‘Oh, here's Mark Kamins,' I'd go sit next to him and say, ‘Hi, I know you're the DJ here, and I'm working on this track. I'd love to play it for you if possible.” He was cute, and I did everything I could to charm him, but he'd reply, ‘Do you know how many people are hounding me to play their demos?' He walked away, but I kept pestering him. I kept coming back, Madonna tells Interview Magazine.

It was at that moment that she was able to meet and get close to Mark Kamins. A twist of fate that then propelled her to the top—and we all know the rest of the story today: Madonna is one of the world's most iconic pop artists.
