This banana “artwork” sold for more than $6M

An unusual work of art, which went viral in 2019 when it sold for $120,000, depicting a banana taped to a wall, sold for more than $6 million at an auction on Wednesday, November 20.

Maurizio Cattelan’s controversial work has once again been put up for auction, this time by the collector who bought it in 2019 for $120,000.

This amount had provoked controversy, the work going viral on social networks that year due to its simplicity – a banana taped to a wall…

…but also because of its absurdity.

But now the “work” has once again found its way to auction, this time via Sotheby’s auction in New York, where the sale reached the incredible sum of 6.24 million US dollars.

The winner of this auction was revealed shortly after the auction’s conclusion.

The banana taped to the wall now belongs to Justin Sun, a Chinese collector and founder of a cryptocurrency platform.

According to CNN, the new buyer of the banana will not receive the 2019 original, but a new banana accompanied by a piece of scotch, as well as a certificate of authenticity.

The buyer expressed his satisfaction at becoming the owner of a true cultural phenomenon.
