New technologies never cease to impress us, with ever more sophisticated devices being released every year. Especially since the 2010s, when the Internet of Things (IoT) became part of our daily lives. Today, we can’t do without them, and we don’t even know how we used to live without things like our smartphones. This has led us to believe that all high-tech products are necessary for everyday life. As a result, we buy everything we can find, but once in our possession, some of these gadgets end up at the back of the cupboard. We’ve put together a list of 10 technological items that we don’t use at all, even though we bought them of our own free will.
Connected scale
Isn’t it great to have detailed statistics on your weight? So you can see if you’ve eaten too much or exercised too little during the week. But the results will make you feel guilty and add more stress to your already problematic life. So you end up avoiding using it too much.
Virtual reality headset
Virtual reality promises an immersive experience as if you were in your own video game or favorite movies. However, you can’t share the experience with your friends as you would with TV, and the atmosphere becomes more boring. The biggest problem is that it cost several hundred, if not thousands of euros.
3D printer
You say to yourself: “With this printer, I could create anything I want! In theory, that’s true, but the printer alone isn’t enough. You’ll also have to design the models to be printed, or search for models available online. So you might think it’s a bit like buying something on the Internet, which is a lot simpler.
Fitness wristband
The bracelet is for real sportsmen and women in search of performance. We’d all like to look like that, but the reality is that these little stats don’t do you much good if you don’t have any competitions to prepare for. Annoyed by the insistent reminders, we end up abandoning this accessory to go running freely, as before.
Connected watch
When you bought your first connected watch, you probably thought you’d look like a secret agent, didn’t you? It must have been a huge disappointment when you noticed that all it did was inundate you with countless notifications. in the end, even if you’re still wearing it, you only use it to look at the time, like a classic watch.
Robot vacuum cleaner
Now you can relax while this little autonomous robot takes care of all the dirt. However, there’s one small problem: it often gets stuck and you have to keep coming back to unblock it. Alternatively, you can put everything away beforehand to make its job easier, just like when you vacuum by hand.
Smart speaker
Talking to your home to control everything is no longer science fiction, and smart speakers are designed as the central hub for these voice commands. Despite this apparent simplicity, we still find manual controls more intuitive. Then, the various settings are accessible from that smartphone you have in your hand all the time.
Recreational drone
Do you want to capture aerial shots? So you decide to buy a drone. However, after two or three flights, you’ve had enough of flying over your neighborhood and the park next door. And since you rarely travel in the wild, the drone will stay in its box and never come out again.
Portable projector
You can’t refuse a movie night, and a portable projector makes it possible to organize one even in the wild. It’s useful if you go camping every weekend, which I’m not so sure you do. What’s more, your friends all have at least 50-inch TVs at home, so it’s more comfortable to watch together.
Action Camera
To live and relive the highlights, you need to record them with a suitable camera that can withstand shocks, immersion, jolts and so on. It’s just that these kinds of epic adventures don’t happen every day. And sometimes, a simple smartphone is all you need to immortalize some of those extraordinary moments.
Smart LED lamps
With connected lamps, you can choose a warm atmosphere for watching a movie or a romantic dinner. Or a brighter light for a small party, for example. But on the whole, they’re used like a normal lamp, with a white light that rarely changes.
Wireless charger
We thought it would be more convenient not to have to plug a cable into the phone to recharge it. However, you still have to plug the charger into an electrical outlet, which already reduces this advantage. What’s more, wireless recharging is often slower than wired recharging, which is more convenient when you’re in a hurry.
Graphic tablet
Some tools are clearly reserved for professionals, and the graphic tablet is one of them. For amateur artists, there are already numerous applications and styli that are more than sufficient on a smartphone or tablet. These are also more practical for everyday use if you want to dispense with the good old pen and paper duo.
SLR camera
Photo enthusiasts are always on the lookout for better cameras, and the SLR is the ultimate in consumer photography. But in recent years, the photo quality of smartphones has steadily improved, so that they’re more than enough for simple Instagram posts. Faced with this, SLR cameras seem too cumbersome on the move.
Connected weather station
This device gives you precise information on the weather and the quality of your environment. Afterwards, you can consult this data on your smartphone. For your information, the latter already has a weather app pre-installed that gives you virtually the same information. And as it also works on the move, you can guess which one will be used more on a daily basis.
Connected air purifier
Its effectiveness is proven when the atmosphere in your home becomes nauseating. But, as well as cleaning the air, we also look for the cause of the unhealthy atmosphere to remedy it – unless, that is, you have no sense of hygiene. Then, as the air is already clean, there’s no need to purify it.
Low-end Bluetooth headphones
Wireless headphones at an affordable price? Who wouldn’t be tempted? Once in your ears, you’ll realize that the latest hits sound like they’ve been ripped from a 1930s 33 rpm record. The microphone isn’t any clearer either, so there’s no point in making calls with it.
Home automation hub
Imagine a device that controls your entire home, even the toilet. That’s what the home automation hub is for, and it’s quite complicated to set up. After this tedious installation, you won’t notice too many advantages over smartphone applications. What’s more, the latter receive frequent updates, making them increasingly powerful.
Portable solar charger
The ecological promise is one of the main arguments for solar chargers. Despite this noble cause, performance leaves much to be desired. Charging power depends entirely on the vagaries of the climate, and we wouldn’t dare imagine charging in the evening. So you can forget about it all winter long, a period when heating bills soar.
Electronic reader
The e-reader is a compromise between the storage capacity of a smartphone and the visual comfort of a paper book for reading your favorite novels. In the end, however, it faces stiff competition from the latter, as it is bulkier and less versatile than a phone, and doesn’t have the same charm as a real book either.
